Protection charms against the evil eye are everywhere in Greece and Turkey, usually made of blue glass. These papier maché versions are my spin on the genre.

I made several dozen of these to accompany “Orthodox Disco!” with different types of eye decorations, and put them on the adjacent walls in rows – like some kind of strange spiritual CCTV camera!
In retrospect I think I would use them as a stand alone project and make dozens and dozens to cover a whole wall to create a hypnotic and unsettling effect. There is something very powerful about the repetitive use of the eye image and it’s something we all recognise instinctively, but we bring our own meaning – is it a benign overseer bringing good luck, or is it an all-seeing eye watching over our human misdeeds? Either way, I find it recurs again and again as an image that pops up in my designs and doodles and I love these deep blues.
