"Les Fruits de Mel"

Experiments with paper

Ingredients: one OHP (found in the yard at Bloc Studios, given new life with a good dusting and a new light bulb); one Ring light left over from all those zoom meetings in lockdown; one USB disco light stick; 6 painted acetate sheets and some paper cut outs; three friends; tea.

Very happy with the Greek blues of the disco light, at least I always think of these particular blues as Greek. It’s getting closer to the prism effect that we saw in the church of St Nicholas, but with a bit of a cheeky nightlife vibe from the OHP projections. It would be interesting to try the projections from behind as a backlight but there’s not enough room in this current siting. To be honest, I’m still experimenting here.

There’s just another week to go for this installation before I take it all down, and it does feel like time to move on to something else, or at least a development of the theme. I am seeing this as a test piece for a larger version in a bigger space with lighting as an inherent part, so that will require collaboration, probably some funding and a fair amount of technical support. And there were lots of elements that were key to the initial idea and then seemed superfluous so they never made the final cut, and maybe these will reappear in a future version. But for now, it feels pretty much complete.
